Location: Parco Naturale dell’Arcipelago Toscano – Mar Tirreno – Italy

Work:

The main activities during the camp are divided into:

1.      Environmental education and land cleaning activities

•        Spotting and collecting floating plastic in the sea

•        Cleaning the beaches and the seabed (up to 4/5 meters in depth)

•        Whale watching

•        Snorkeling and recognizing marine life

•        Identifying plants, herbs, and shrubs

2.      Boat management

•        Steering the boat

•        First approaches to navigation techniques and boat nomenclature

•        Introduction to meteorology, also in light of climate change

•        On-board life shifts (cooking, setting/clearing the table, washing dishes, cleaning) & Boat maintenance (small carpentry tasks)

Accomodation and food

- the boat: Inaê, 19-meter steel sailboat model Van Dame Nordia 61, two masts, Yawl rigged, 240hp engine, 4.5-meter dinghy with 15hp outboard.
- accommodation: 2 cabins with 4 bunk beds, 3 bathrooms, boiler, a three-burner galley, oven, refrigerators, microwave. On deck: cockpit with hard top and deck with equipment for sports activities.
-Food: breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared by the participant(s) in turn, with help from the educators. Predominantly vegetarian meals. Fresh and local products when possible.
Breakfast: milk, tea, coffee, yogurt, bread and jam, cereal, cookies, honey, fruit
Lunch and dinner: cereal (pasta, rice, spelt, couscous), cooked or raw vegetables, protein (meat/sliced meat, legumes, eggs, fish, cheese), fruit.

EXTRA FREE  800,00 €. The fee includes the provisioning for the operation and management of the boat, meals, and insurance..

FREE TIME

In the evening you can decide with the others if you want to play board games, look at the stars, go for a walk or tell eachother stories.

TRAVEL:   The nearest airport is the one from PISA. From there you can take a regional train to S. Vincenzo (about 1h). An alternative is the airport in Rome that is about 3h away by train.

MEETING POINT: S. Vincenzo tourist port (LI) on the 26/6 at 14:00. Return to the port of S. Vincenzo on the 2/7 at 14:00.

Project hosted by

This proposal results from the meeting of IBO Italia with the association of social promotion “I Tetragonauti” – “The tetragonauts”, born in 2003, that today consists of professionals and volunteers in the pedagogical-educational and marine experience field. The main goal of the tetragonauts is to realise interventions and socio-educational projects directed to minors, minors with fewer opportunities and difficulties and to people with disabilities by identifying in the marine and sailing environment the privileged contexts and tools of one’s own work. The project involves therefore a volunteering experience on board of a sailing boat. Why should I do this experience?

To travel on the sea has strong educative and formative characteristics. Being part of a crew, sharing with the others the emotions of navigating, the responsibilities, the pleasant situations and the ones with difficulties, allows you to enter in a new dimension made of mutual collaboration, fellowship and trust. The community life in a boat is the priviledged place of collaborative making, the main space to experiment the relationship with rules, roles, duties, tasks and responsibility.  The trip is without doubt the most educative moment.  The activities will foresee the alternation of moments on board and on land. During the week there will be carried out cleaning and maintenance work of the beaches and the trekking paths of the places that will be reached by boat. There will be given much importance to the matter of using plastic and plastic in the sea as part of the project Back to Life.

In addition, life on board will be managed communally throughout cooking and cleaning shifts.
