Bäckedal Folk High School s located in Härjedalen, a mountainous and sparsely populated region in northern Sweden. Bäckedal is an institute of popular education dedicated to adult learning that offers general programs providing basic eligibility for higher education, as well as specialized programs in traditional skills and crafts. Leather, metal, and textile processes—from ancient to modern times—constitute the core of most of our courses, alongside sustainable living, democratic values, and humanity’s historical relationship with nature. Bäckedal is funded by the Swedish state and is independent of religion, party politics, and external financial interests. This is the third work camp arranged together with IAL!
Study theme: This camp is also a course. The theme during the camp is practical volunteerism and active citizenship. We will discuss how we create sustainable knowledge and a compass for the future based on SCI’s vision of a more peaceful and sustainable world.
Work description: The work will include building, repairing, removal work, maintenance, cleaning, and painting. There will also be some gardening, such as tree cutting, hedge cutting, and planting. Working hours can be flexible depending on the weather. Part of the work will take place at Bäckedal’s recently acquired forest lodge/slightly derelict chalet, Jo-jonsvallen, which is situated outside of Älvros, about half an hour’s drive from the school.
