The daily work commitment will be 6 hours. To avoid the heat, activities will take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The work will be divided in several teams, always followed by local volunteers that will rotate through the following activities:
* Murals: collective painting workshops involving the local population to redevelop a large grey concrete wall and convey a message of peace to the community. A mural or mosaic may be created in Torricella in Sabina, and a mural in the Municipality of Monteleone Sabino and/or in Ginestra Sabina (a hamlet of the Municipality of Monteleone Sabino). In all locations where the artistic works are carried out, multicultural inauguration events will also be organized.
* Redevelopment of a public space to be returned to the community as a place for meeting, sharing, and human growth.
* Open-air classroom and educational garden: participation in the design of educational trails in the forest, including related informational signage, as well as involvement in the construction of a greenhouse.
* Redevelopment of the food forest and elevated garden: in 2023, “Lion Project 1.0” restored a rooftop garden in the center of the village of Monteleone Sabino. With “Lion Project 3.0,” the aim is to clean and enhance the garden in order to host social activities and open-air film forums for the local population.
* Organization and implementation of two community events (one in each participating municipality), followed by cleaning and tidying up.
Accomodation and food
Accommodation will be in the parish house in Torricella in Sabina, equipped with 2 dorms and 2 bathrooms, only one of them with a shower. One of the activities of the camp will be to install an outdoor solar shower. Volunteers will also have a small kitchen at their disposal for their meals.
The group of volunteers will be responsible for preparing meals and for cleaning the kitchen, common areas, indoor facilities, and outdoor spaces provided for their accommodation. Subgroups will be organized to manage shopping and cooking shifts, as well as to keep track of any specific dietary requirements. The accommodation doesn’t have wi-fi, but it is close to the village bar that has a public connection.
Location and leisure
The camp is located in Alta Sabina, a rural region in the Apennines mountains with beautiful, ancient villages that are becoming depopulated, perched on mountains and hills, surrounded by woods and olive groves. Monteleone Sabino is home to an archaeological museum and several ancient Roman and medieval sites of extraordinary architectural and archaeological beauty.
The area is located about 60 km from Rome, and volunteers are therefore encouraged to take some time, either before arriving or after departing, to visit the city.
During the workcamp there will be the possibility to have organised visits to the nearby city of Rieti and the beaches of Turano lake.
Project hosted by
Pianeti Umani- Pi.Uma. is a youth organization mainly composed of young people aged between 18 and 30, supported by Lunaria in the organisation of this camp. Since 2022, the association has been actively engaged in revitalizing the local area and promoting, within local communities, the values of togetherness, solidarity, respect for diversity, inclusion, ecological education, and active citizenship. Individuals over the age of 30 who are deeply committed to the local community and territory also participate in the association, contributing to the promotion of cooperation and unity. The association holds regular meetings to exchange ideas, aspirations, and solutions, fostering collective reflection and shared vision. Its activities aim to rediscover and redevelop places of local significance by involving community volunteers, while also embracing intercultural exchange and openness to the wider world. Personal, social, cultural, and professional growth lies at the core of the organization’s mission. The deteriorated condition of several places of shared interest has further strengthened the association’s motivation to restore these spaces and return them to the community as environments for human development, participation, and shared experiences.
