Community Work and Village Festival - Schwarzerden

WORK: You support the villagers of Schwarzerden in preparing and running their traditional village festival: 3 days of live music, drinks, food, and funny competitions – a good way to immerse yourself in rural Germany. Additionally, you renovate two wooden shelters for hikers one of which was built with the help of international volunteers in 2019. This includes woodwork, paint jobs, and roof maintenance. For the local infrastructure you take care of installing benches, maintaining a playground as well as gardening and renovation work around the accommodation. The locals greatly appreciate your help and are happy to meet you.
ACCOMMODATION: You stay at the former center of the Schwarzerden sports club. It is now in public use for bigger events in this village. Facilities include a sports hall with camping beds, a kitchen, toilettes, and showers. If the weather is good, you can eat and chill outside. Attention: Please bring your own sleeping bag and pillow (if required). Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The entire group does grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning together. Food will be bought with the camp budget. To minimize our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more environmentally friendly meals.
LOCATION: The camp is quite isolated; the village of Schwarzerden is 1km away. You have a nice view over the valley and are surrounded by forests and meadows. A great place to be in nature. Schwarzerden is a small village in Freisen with 450 inhabitants and already experienced in welcoming international volunteers. You can find a historical railway, cultural and natural sights, a small zoo, and a spa bath.

Please be aware that ticks can be an issue after spending a lot of time outdoors. In our General Info Sheet you will find suggestions on how you can protect yourself against them. Consider to check whether a vaccination against the tick-borne disease TBE makes sense and is possible in your home country.
This camp supports the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development by the United Nations and highlights our contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals defined for Good Health and Well-Being (3) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (11).

ARRIVAL: Please check www.bahn.com for a connection from anywhere in Germany to “Schwarzerden Bahnhof, Freisen”. This bus stop is only 300m from your accommodation. You will travel by train to St. Wendel and change to the bus No. 604. Please make sure to arrive in St. Wendel before 20.25 p.m. to reach the last bus of the day to Schwarzerden.
NEXT TRAIN STATION: St.Wendel (D- 66606) Please make sure to arrive in St. Wendel before 8:25 PM to get the last bus to Schwarzerden Bahnhof !!
