Work description
Volunteers will participate in practical, educational, and community-based activities. The work is voluntary, non-profit, and educational. Volunteers are not expected to replace local workers or technical experts; rather, their role is to support learning, awareness-building, documentation, and community-based environmental action. Activities include:
Observing community composting and waste-management practices during project visits.
Supporting fish offal collection and simple waste sorting in Api-Api Village.
Assisting in the production of Liquid Organic Fertilizer from fish offal.
Supporting basic fish meal processing and drying activities.
Joining environmental education and community awareness activities.
Documenting field processes, group learning, and community engagement.
Participating in short discussions and reflection sessions on coastal sustainability and their circular economy.
Requirements
Participants must be active undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral students from any major, or researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in environmental education, coastal sustainability, the circular economy, community service, or intercultural learning.
Basic English communication is expected, as the program involves international participants, academic discussion, and cross-cultural interaction.

- Accommodation and food
Accommodation and meals will be arrange by the hosting organization during the program. Participants should be prepared for simple living conditions, shared facilities, direct community interaction, outdoor activities, and hands-on environmental work. Flexibility, respect, teamwork, and openness are essential throughout the program.
- Free time possibilities
During free time, volunteers will have the chance to explore two of Central Java’s most culturally vibrant cities.
Pekalongan: The World’s Batik City recognized by UNESCO. Batik is Indonesia’s traditional wax-resist dyeing technique used to create stunning, intricate patterns on natural cotton and silk. You can visit local batik workshops, explore historical neighborhoods, trying local food, or enjoy the coastal beaches.
Semarang: A Beautiful Blend of Cultures as a historic port city, Semarang boasts an incredible mix of Javanese, Chinese, and European influences. Take a walk back in time through Kota Lama (the Old Town), famous for its preserved colonial architecture, vibrant cafes, and atmospheric streets.
Fees
Note: This is the amount you will pay upon arrival. It is separate from the sending fee.
10 Euros (covers management fees, payable upon arrival) or FREE for KITAS/ Student Visa Holder living in Indonesia. Bhumi Horta Foundation will cover meals, accomodation, and transportation during the project.
