CODE: EBREFOLK FESTIVAL
THE COORDINATING ORGANISATION:
You are going to participate in a project coordinated by COCAT, the Catalan platform for international work camps
and voluntary service. COCAT consists of various organizations that, in the past, decided to create it to ensure there would be only one international representative for all of them.
In COCAT, we manage volunteers traveling to and from international work camps, promote the learning and international social participation of young people, encourage individual and collective development, and strive to break down or dissolve social inequalities and injustices. (For more information about us, you can check: www.cocat.org).
However, the organization that organizes the camp is a local one, with which we work very closely to provide a common service with shared goals. This is the organization you are about to meet, which will offer you a great experience this summer, along with your effort and your colleagues!
THE HOST:
The hosting organization is Obre't Ebre, a non-profit association created in 2005. Its main area of activity is in Terres de l'Ebre, and the primary objectives of the association are to foster the social inclusion of young people, generate socio-community actions to encourage social cohesion and the values of cooperation, tolerance, respect , and justice, and promote participation to educate active citizenship, highlighting volunteering as a tool for social cohesion.
In addition, the association informs, advises, coordinates, and manages international mobility programs in the field of non-
formal education.
To achieve its goals, the association works with the following programs: awareness, mobility, participation , and training.
Obre' t Ebre collaborates with various entities in the territory to empower them in mobility and non - formal education.
For the past four years, Obre't Ebre has cooperated with the entity Espai de So, the organizer of the Ebrefolk festival , by involving young people in youth exchanges and international group projects.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The EBREFOLK Ethnomusical Heritage project it is run by the entity Espai de So, which is an ethnographic research and
dissemination association supported by various institutions. Its aim is to promote the ethnomusical heritage of the coastal
regions of the Ebre River and its tributaries—a shared area between Aragón, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community. Over the course of four days in July, Móra d'Ebre (Ribera d'Ebre) hosts a variety of workshops, celebrations, musical performances, and exhibitions.
Founded in 2013, the project focuses on workshops designed for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of the traditional musical culture of this region. These workshops are taught by specialists in the field. However, the main focus of the project is to provide a fresh perspective on the ethnomusical and ethnocoreological heritage of these territories, addressing and correcting any misrepresentations or distortions from the past.
One key element of the project is the recognition of the strong connection between the local population and the jota (a musical genre that has become a symbol of regional identity).
However, the jota represents just a small part of a broader, more intricate, and often fragile cultural heritage, both material and immaterial.
EBREFOLK seeks to establish itself as a hub for learning, cultural exchange, and the celebration of interconnected musical traditions from Mediterranean and Hispanic regions, all within the stunning landscape of Catalan-speaking territory.
By engaging young volunteers participate in local events like the Ebrefolk festival and involving them in activities such as
cleaning up the town, they become part of the community’s daily life. These efforts not only improve the local environment but also help create real, meaningful connections between the volunteers and the locals. When volunteers take the time to meet locals, share their cultures, and organize events like traditional games in the town square, it opens the door to genuine cultural exchange. This kind of interaction strengthens community bonds, making the experience rewarding for everyone involved. It promotes a spirit of togetherness, where both locals and volunteers learn from each other and leave with a greater sense of unity and mutual respect.
The group of young people will collaborate with the local community during the festival. Before to the festival, the group will be on their own. It is important to be open-minded since at the Ebrefolk festival, you may meet elderly people and children as well. During the festival, you will have the opportunity to share meals with the participants of the Ebrefolk. This community includes musicians, politicians, folk learners of all ages, and local residents...
