Description: SCI Sri Lanka working with partner organization Like, The T.E.A. Project(Training, Empowerment, Awareness) – a Children’s Rights led INGO in Sri Lanka and registered UK Charity which works to empower Sri Lankan children from poverty. The T.E.A. Project Centre for Children’s Empowerment supports disadvantaged children & young people from poor tea plantation communiTEAs. Extending support to children nationally and grassroots NGO’s, education service providers, orphanages and government schools. The T.E.A. Project develops ambition, practical skills, knowledge and important opportuniTEAs for underprivileged children and their communiTEAs. Developing skills, aspirations and confidence in young people is key to securing a positive and sustainable future in Sri Lanka & the world.
Type of Work: Preparation of vegetable beds and nursery beds for organic farming, Repairing the water source, the fence and the wall cupboards in the centre, Building outdoor kitchen, Cleaning outside well and Teaching English
Study Theme: This workcamp focuses on Sustainable Community Development and Environmental Education through hands-on activities such as preparing vegetable and nursery beds for organic farming, repairing essential infrastructure, and teaching English. Participants contribute to sustainable agriculture, resource conservation, and community resilience, gaining practical skills in eco-friendly practices, cultural exchange, and educational empowerment.
Accommodation: Participants will stay in a centre with basic living condition and shared sleeping spaces are separated for males and females. Volunteers will sleep together on the floor mats. Water and bathing facilities are satisfactory; clothes should be hand-washed. No internet access in the house.
Language: The main spoken languages during the camp will be English but local languages are Tamil/Sinhalese and the camp coordinator is English/French.
Requirements: Volunteers should be physically fit and adaptable, with a passion for sustainability and organic farming. Basic English skills, a cooperative spirit, and an interest in teaching will enhance collaboration and community engagement. Enthusiasm, flexibility, and commitment to eco-friendly practices are essential for a rewarding experience in this workcamp.
Approximate Location: Kandy is located in Central Province
Notes: Once you reach Kandy city, take a bus to “Art Lanka bus stop in Getambe.” From there you could hire a three wheel (Tuk-tuk) or walk up to “Blue Rose” (SCI KANDY). A three wheeler hire will cost around 200-250 LKR. Private transport could be provided on request and it will cost you around 80 Euros from the Airport to the SCI office in Kandy.
