Description: SCI Malaysia is collaborating with HANDS, a local NGO to host a workcamp to expose interested participants on Farming – Farm Entrepreneurship – Farm Life – Nature – Sustainable Living – Peace and Harmony with the Community. The setting is a 2 +1 Acres Farm in rural Malaysia, about 60 km fr KL, the Capital.
In the farm there are over 30 variety of Fruits Trees, Vegetables and a Durian Plantation. Participants will learn from the Owner - Farmer how he had developed a challenging plot of land into an Eco-friendly self-sustaining productive Farm. Will invite Experienced Resource Partners to share their knowledge on Crop Management, Equipment and Facility Maintenance for a balance Eco-system - And how to manage and retain Farm Workers.
The Farm Setting - vicinity of a Malaysian Rain Forest
Type of Work: Participants will lead a Farmers Life - getting early and work may vary - and may include weeding, planting, harvesting, pruning and some maintenance work. Building a new nursery is one probable project. Bring along long sleeve shirt and loose pants, gloves and working shoe. Tools – needed for farm-work will be provided.
Study Theme: Getting to know the plants, name, characteristics and its nature. Learning about the challenge and strategy of farm start up and development. Learn about the Technologies for small- and large-scale plantation (guest speakers) There will be daily Reflection Time to review Issues and improve on it There will be a session on Peace Education and also Intercultural Exchanges How to manage and retain Farm Workers
Accommodation: There are adequate rooms and open space for sleeping. Bring along a sleeping bag and mosquitoes repellants and sun-block. Participants are expected to keep the place clean, neat and orderly. There are 2 bath rooms with hot shower provided. Cooking, washing faculties are available. Participants are expected to prepare their own meals – Share your home recipe.
There is limited Internet Facility. Participants advise to purchase a local SIM card .
Language: English will be the spoken language
Requirements: This camp requires an additional motivation letter to explain in more detail why you would like to attend. Participants must be prepared to live life as ordinary farmers, willing to provide 6 hours of labour / practical service, and be curious and interested to listen, learn and share farm knowledge and experiences. Participants must be Cooperative, Helpful to one another and willing to share and work. Participant must be dog-tolerant (dogs are useful pest – control)
Approximate Location: The site can be located under: Nick’s Dusun, Lot 2879, Pekan Pantai, 71770, Negri Sembilan, Malaysia. It is about 60 km from the KL City and KL International Airport.
Notes: Plan is to spend last 2 days at Kuala Lumpur – One day on your own and another to visit KL’s highlights – Team to decide.
