LIVING TRADITIONS – Heritage and Community in Sai Kung

Participants will take part in a Sai Kung-based international workcamp built around genuine, need-led service at a local village temple during its year-end preparation period — including deep cleaning, tidying outdoor and indoor spaces, moving and sorting materials, and helping prepare ritual or festival items — alongside a walk connecting the temple to the wider village and daily life around it.
Participants also move from tradition into today's community: an exchange at a local community centre brings together overseas participants with elderly residents and community members through stories, food, simple crafts or games, and a heritage-trail experience with a local guide explores how paths, villages and historic chapels in the area carry local memory, paired with a litter pick-up / simple environmental clean-up. Protected free time is also built in for participants to rest and explore independently.
The workcamp includes a period of shared creation: local and overseas participants form mixed teams to co-create a new community mural and touch up an existing village mural with a local artist, capturing their experience along the way through a simple daily drawing card that is brought together into a shared community map, before a closing community
farewell and gathering (exact arrangement subject to final confirmation).

ACCOMODATION AND FOOD
Accommodation will be in a hostel with simple facilities, in shared rooms with shower and toilet. Meals will generally be prepared together by the group within the simple living conditions of a rural / community setting, with some meals arranged by local partners depending on the day's activity and schedule.

LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY
The workcamp will mainly take place in Sai Kung District, Hong Kong, focusing on Ho Chung, Sai Kung town / the District Community Centre, and Pak Tam Chung.

Sai Kung is known as Hong Kong's "back garden" for its country parks, coastline and village culture. Rather than treating Sai Kung as a list of attractions, this workcamp goes deep into one district to understand how tradition, service and community life connect to one another.

During free time, participants may enjoy Sai Kung's natural environment, village scenery, local food and seaside atmosphere. As the camp is community- and service-focused, participants should follow the group schedule closely, and transport, weather and community needs will be considered when planning leisure time.

REQUIREMENTS
Participants should be aged 18 - 29, curious about local traditions, heritage and intergenerational exchange, and willing to live and work in a simple, community-based setting while staying respectful towards religious sites, village customs and community rhythm, flexible with changes caused by weather or community needs, and ready to communicate in English and work as a team with other international participants.

PARTNER
The main service partner is a village temple that welcomes participants into its year-end thanksgiving preparation period, sharing how a village temple is maintained through daily care, seasonal ritual and community cooperation, while a local community centre connects participants with elderly residents and community members so that local culture is understood through today's community, not only through heritage sites.

A local heritage-interpretation partner leads participants on a trail day, sharing the history of the paths, villages and historic chapels of the area and linking place to memory, and a local artist partners with VolTra for the closing weekend, in which local and overseas participants co-create a new community mural and touch up an existing village mural together.
