Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project: Kinderhospiz Löwenherz e.V. The Lion heart children's hospice in Syke accepts children, teenagers and young adults with life-shortening illnesses for which a cure is not possible according to the current state of medicine. During their stay, the hospice staff take over the care and support of the children in close consultation with their parents. The parents decide how much care they want to hand over to the staff and how much they want to take on themselves. They are free to devote their time to their sick child or siblings - or to spend time together with their partner. They are given freedom and are thus relieved of the pressure of their daily obligations or have time to deal intensively with their particular situation.
Work:
In this workcamp, you will spend the first week (Tuesday to Friday) building raised beds for a children's hospice and the second week (Monday to Thursday) carrying out various nature conservation measures. The Lion Heart children's hospice in Syke takes in children, teenagers and young adults with life-shortening illnesses for which a cure is impossible according to the current state of medicine. There is currently a vacant plot of land right next to the hospice's administration building and the associated car park. Until an extension is built there in a few years, a temporary meeting place is to be created on this plot, which will be available to hospice visitors as well as citizens of Syke. The task of your workcamp group is to build four raised beds. Once the construction is complete, the beds will be maintained as part of a school co-operation and by the guests of the children's and youth hospice. In the second week, you will work with the local forestry office to set up a winter roost for bats and support the local nature conservation organisation NABU Syke und Umland e.V. in maintaining a dry grassland area, developing a nature trail and renewing the fence of a sheep meadow. You will be supervised by employees of the Syke building authority, volunteer members of NABU Syke und Umland e.V. and employees of the local forestry office. In addition to the practical work, you will learn a lot about nature, environmental, forest and animal protection. Furthermore you will get information about local flora and fauna and about the protection of endangered habitats. You will also get to meet the children, teenagers and young adults at the hospice, with a joint barbecue including baking bread on a stick planned. This will give you the opportunity to actively deal with the topics of illness, dying, death and mourning in a protected and supervised setting, while the children, teenagers and young adults at the hospice will have the opportunity to learn about your countries and cultures through personal contact.
Accomodation and food
You will stay in the Wöpse youth hostel, a self-catering house with 4-bed rooms on the edge of a nature reserve. The house has a kitchen, two washrooms with showers and toilets and two lounges for eating and group activities. There is also a large outdoor area with a lawn where you can play volleyball, football and other games. You will cook together. Money for food will be provided. Vegetarian or vegan meals are possible. Please state any intolerances during registration.
