The whole festival is voluntarily organized, every one of our team is working on a volunteer base. Most people who participate use their holiday or take time off from work to be part of the festival.
The volunteers will help build up different areas of the festival such as all food/beverage and sale stands, all kinds of technic (projection and sound), the screens as well as the decorations on the festival areas.
There will be an Area for the screening in the evening (Tännchen), a darkened Circus tent for the daytime and a Camping area on a meadow.
The Open-Air Filmfest Weiterstadt runs from 14th until 18th August 2025. In these 5 days support is also needed: keep the area clean, sell drinks and food, join the kitchen team and prepare food for guests and staff. Afterwards the participants will also help to re-build the area. The working hours may be sometimes more than 6h and sometimes weekends are also working days, but there will be compensatory time-off. So, you will have your weekend - just on a different day.
During the festival you will also get in touch with the international film makers and German locals. Of course, you will also have time to watch some movies.
Accomodation and food
Your accommodation will be very basic. You, most of the Filmmakers as well as the Team will sleep in tents on the Camping area (open space with meadow), during the festival. Please bring your own sleeping bag and a camping mat with you! The festival has no sleeping Bags and no camping mats. We can only provide tents but no additional equipment. Please have also in mind that the weather in Germany is changing drastically in a short time. Very hot one day and sometimes freezing cold the other night. August can be also a bit stormy, so bring waterproof raincoats or -clothes with you. Generally, August in the south of Germany is the peak summer season. Please bring some sun blocker with you and clothing that works for you to cope with the heat.
Showers and toilets are in a building next to your accommodation (you need your own towels and hygienic products). The festival area is near a forest. There are different typical insects flying around such as bugs, bees and wasps! Food will be provided by the project partner and camp participants will join the kitchen team in a rotation method.
We have typical German mealtimes, that means breakfast is at morning, cold platter with sandwiches, cake and sweets during the day and a warm meal in the evening.
There is an indoor swimming pool nearby, so bring your swimwear with you.

Quote: Woodstock, Wacken, Weiterstadt – the biggest open air short film festival in Germany
Because during hot and sunny summer days, there was no audience inside, the local cinema of Weiterstadt (KoKi) decided to move outside with one of their self-made movies (Pink Floyd in Pompeji), in 1977. The Open Air Filmfest Weiterstadt was born. During the years more films had been shown, the festival lasted more and more days, the audience increased, the open-air screen got enlarged, the afternoon presentations got extended, the area was getting bigger. That means a lot more logistics and crew are needed. Therefore, the help of the workcamp volunteers will be very appreciated.
